One of my most favorite events each springtime is the Atlanta Science Festival! My favorite part was volunteering at the huge Piedmont Park science exposition. This year, they have been so kind and developed a wonderful Atlanta Science Festival At Home for this spring!
Timber Ridge! Let's all make and share one Atlanta Science Festival project together - a SCIKU - a haiku poem about science or STEM! Here are the rules from the website... A haiku is a three-line poem – the first line should have 5 syllables, the next line 7 syllables, and the final line 5 syllables. The ancient Japanese form of expression doesn’t have to rhyme, but it should tell a story about what inspires and moves you. For additional STEM challenges:
When you have completed your SciKu, email it to me and I will post it on the Student & Teacher Projects page. Teachers - you too! Click the Student & Teacher Projects page to see my first Sciku! The weather is beautiful! Lets learn about plants! One of the coolest part of plants is cooking and eating! This STEM challenge will have several parts, so stay tuned!
A. Take free online cooking classes with Chef Asata! Click to sign up on a Zoom cooking lesson. Our Timber Ridge garden partner, Captain Planet, has been so kind to provide this! Please send me an email with photos and tell me about your cooking classes and I will post them to the STEM Lab blog! . Thanks Johnny and Maret for this ICE CREAM Challenge! Let's think about how we are using fractions with cooking - COOKING =science+math :-)
Ice Cream in a Bag! 1 large zipper sandwich bag 1 small zipper sandwich bag 1/2 cup milk 1 1/2 tablespoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 trays or approximately 32 pieces of ice 6 tablespoons salt Your favorite toppings (if you want chocolate, add 2 t of cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon more sugar)
Check out the Student & Teacher's Project Page for pics of Maret & Johnny making this math and science treat! Anya C. made ice cream too! Everyone loves Mystery Science! This week, chick out our friend, Doug, as he looks at why birds lay eggs in the springtime! I just LOVE Science Buddies! Check out these 12 fun engineering challenges they have for us this week!
I'm not sure it is possible to have too much of SCIENCE BUDDIES in my life...how about you? This week I am posting TWO activities - try one or try them all! Send me your photos and videos for the blog. Challenge your classmates to do them too - call them on the phone :-)Once upon a time, (before STEM classes even!) kids had a great time making thaumatropes. Let's all try one! Send me your videos to post on our STEM blog. Here are the instructions - have FUN! After you complete the sample, can you come up with your own images? What happens if you make a thaumatrope with the images in the center?
This Science Buddies science activity explores the capillary action while you make Technicolor Flowers ! Try this fun way to transform white flowers into an extra-colorful bouquet (and observe capillary action at the same time). Click the flowers for your instructions...
Candy Diffusion Art! Don't forget to save some to eat! Thanks, Science Buddies!
